To celebrate World Tourism Day, in association with GreenpopSA , Tourism Ireland gave back to the community and environment by literally digging deep and planting trees at Witkoppen Primary School on 23rd September 2014.
The objective of this tree planting initiative was to give back to the communities at large and assist them in reaping environmental, economic and social benefits as a result as this year, the theme for international Tourism Day is ‘’tourism and community development’’. Greenpop is a social enterprise that runs urban greening and reforestation projects in sub-Saharan Africa.
Greenpop plants trees and strives to see inspiration instead of gloom in the green space and create innovative and sustainable solutions. By educating people on best practice tree care, monitoring trees and working together to leave a lasting legacy, Greenpop says green living is fun. The excited students at Witkoppen Primary School rolled up their sleeves and dug holes, planted trees and made sure their new treasures are well looked after. The students, who are from disadvantaged backgrounds, proposed ways in which they can look after trees by watering them three times a week and throughout the school holidays with “grey water” or recycled water brought from home. They are committed to starting an Eco Group which is a club within the school which will educate the pupils about recycling and environmental issues.
As Ireland is known as ‘’The Emerald Isle – the land that boasts 40 shades of green’’, it appropriate and considered it a privilege to be a part of this greening initiative.
It was a pleasure to watch the children’s faces light up as they participated in the fun activities planned and in planting trees to beautify their surroundings as well.
