October is INTERNATIONAL BREAST CANCER awareness month. According to the Cancer Association of South Africa, breast cancer is the most common cancer afflicting South African women.

In an effort to promote health with early detection, education, and to curb the scourge, THE GENESS FOUNDATION will be hosting the inaugural “Femininity Fair” on 25 October 2014 at The Venue, Melrose Arch, 11am to 2pm.

Led by Dr SHEENA GENESS, the foundation supports and establishes projects that respond to the critical development needs of humanity in the arena of Health, Education, Entrepreneurship and Sport in Africa.

A central theme of the Femininity Fair is, “Allowing Ladies to celebrate womanhood”. The fair will play host to over 200 guests and will provide a platform for women to celebrate a health initiative that will create awareness of breast cancer. Guests will also be given beauty and skincare tips and receive insight into sexual health and techniques to enhance their longevity. All this whilst indulging in a decadent 5 star lunch and being serenaded by the divine Natalie R.

The “Femininity Fair” aims to empower women to look after their health and well-being. The event will help create heightened awareness and provide women with a holistic approach to their health.

“The Femininity Fair will serve as an excellent platform to address breast cancer, and ultimately support government health care initiatives,” says Dr Sheena

Proceeds from the fair will be donated to the Breast Health Foundation at Helen Joseph Breast Cancer Clinic in Johannesburg. The centre is a breast care facility which promotes affordable care to patients with breast pathology at a provincial level. The centre provides a multidisciplinary, education orientated approach boasting high patient care with an excellent reputation for service delivery.

Cancer Facts

According to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) latest statistics, 8.2 million people died of cancer in 2012. About 47,000 of these deaths occurred in South Africa where cancers of the lung, oesophagus, breast and prostrate are among the most common forms of cancer.

Keynote speakers at the event will include: Dr Carol Ann Benn (a leading breast surgeon and head of the Helen Joseph Breast Clinic), Dr Marisse Venter (plastic and reconstructive surgeon), Dr Reza Mia (aesthetics specialist), Gina Myers (a celebrity and national Elizabeth Arden makeup artist), Joan Ramagoshi (ex Miss SA and businesswoman), Sharon Gordan (founder of Lola Montez), Dr Pholile Mpofu (a leading Gauteng dermatologist), and Louise Turner of The Breast Health Foundation.
